LOCAL AREA

Cool cosmopolitan, crowded, constantly evolving, the Big Apple blends big city splendor with small-town charm. Amid Gotham’s iconic landmarks and towering skyscrapers, you’ll experience a vibrant culture permeating each of the city’s distinctive neighborhoods and boroughs. Follow trendsetters to the East Village and Brooklyn to check out indie boutiques, iconic bakeries, and trendy coffee shops. Afterward, peruse the racks of sleek shops lining Fifth Avenue, admire the cutting-edge art collections at the MoMA and the Met, catch a memorable show on Broadway or sit down for a meal at the latest “it” restaurant.

Points of interest from the InterContinental New York Times Square:

  • Times Square (0.2 mile): A five-block metaphor for New York City itself—it’s exciting, colorful, and always jumping.
  • Broadway (0.6 mile): If you like plays and musicals, this is where you should be: “The Great White Way” represents the heart and soul of American theater. Most visitors are impressed with the beautiful marquees, the cozy theaters, and the exceptional talent on stage.
  • Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock Observation Deck (0.6 mile): This iconic plaza has it all: beautiful sculptures, an enormous skating rink, a fishbowl view of NBC Studios, plus hordes of stores and restaurants. The deck provides one of the best views of NYC’s legendary skyline and cityscape, including the Statue of Liberty.
  • Bryant Park (0.6 mile): This lush green space has existed for more than 150 years. Some of the most beautiful 4 acres in Manhattan. A sanctuary for locals and tourists alike.
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral (0.9 mile): This sprawling cathedral sits amid the hustle and distinctively secular bustle of Rockefeller Center. The small historical church’s beauty and stained-glass windows are loved by locals and visitors both.
  • Central Park (0.9 mile): A green oasis in the middle of the big city—and perhaps the world’s famous public park. Its 843 beautifully landscaped acres host meadows, bodies of water, 58 miles of walking paths, 36 bridges and arches and every kind of outdoor recreational activity imaginable.
  • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) (0.9 mile): Visit one of the world’s finest collections of contemporary art, ranging from painting to sculpture to film and live performance.
  • Empire State Building (1.1 miles): You must swing by this landmark structure in midtown Manhattan. Taking a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is either the perfect way to begin or end your Big Apple excursion.
  • Chrysler Building (1.1 miles): This 1,046-ft high skyscraper remains a New York favorite for its classic art deco style. You can behold the building’s menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan.
  • The High Line (1.5 miles): Set on an abandoned rail track on Manhattan’s West Side, this sprawling 1-1/2-mile-long landscaped park stretches over three of the city’s most lively neighborhoods: the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen.
  • American Museum of Natural History (2.1 miles): There are approximately 32 million artifacts inside, spread across four city blocks, 25 buildings and through 45 exhibition halls. You can’t see everything in one day.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art (2.8 miles): Spilling over with masterpieces from all over the world, including notable collections from Ancient Egypt and classical antiquity, “the Met” is an art experience unlike any other.
  • National 9/11 Memorial & Museum (4.7 miles): Serves as the primary tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as the six lost in the 1993 bombing. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools and manmade waterfalls rest as eerie footprints where the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers once stood.
  • Harlem (6.2 miles): One of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods and a world capital of African-American history and culture. Get there early enough and drop by the Studio Museum in Harlem. It highlights black artists from the United States and around the world. In the evening, check out The Apollo Theater, a long-standing institution that has hosted luminaries such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
  • Statue of Liberty (6.3 miles): Classic American icon. Go by ferry to Liberty Island and be sure to stop at Ellis Island before returning to the mainland.

Why PCN Destination Conferences?

For over 20 years, Primary Care Network (PCN), a not-for-profit organization, has been dedicated to impacting healthcare by improving patient care through quality continuing medical education. From live, multi-specialty activities to engaging and innovative on-line offerings, PCN is nationally accredited and manages a network of primary care clinicians, accrediting activities in a wide variety of program formats and therapeutic areas. PCN activities are creative, ethical, free of commercial bias, based on adult learning principles and include achievable practice change opportunities that capture the strength of evidence-based medicine. It is PCN’s goal to develop activities that identify the needs of audiences through a thorough planning process, select the experts and ‘teachers’ who deliver activities directed to enhance knowledge and practice change, and increase competencies that provide better patient outcomes.

PCN surveyed our network of primary care clinicians and found there is a need for quality education in enjoyable places. This way primary care clinicians can earn CME credit in the morning and enjoy themselves in the afternoon with family, friends or colleagues. Primary Care Network has always offered top quality education, and now we are mixing it with wonderful destination locations.
